Driving through Kuala Lumpur gets more and more stressful. The roads are constantly clogged, lots of honking and pushing each other away.

It looks and feels as if there are private wars going on. Looking into the cars, and observing the different drivers reveals frustration, anger and resignation. Only a few animated smiles or conversations. Many are engaged in calls or text.

Once the road clears ever so slightly, everybody accelerates like they want to model Michael Schumacher. It gets scary to observe the buses or lorries on the fast lane, in short distance to the car in front. If something happens, there is no stopping. Sometimes it seems as if the drivers of such lorries believes that the lorry is a small and versatile car, like the Kancil. I wonder if the parents know how fast these buses go!

Once in a while, when I come back from outstation, I can immediately feel, when I reach the vicinity of Kuala Lumpur - the behaviour on the roads simply become more aggressive.

I believe that the way we behave when unobserved, is the way we express our most inner desires. Moreover, when we repeat the same behaviour over and over, it becomes entrenched in our neurology. Basically, the behaviour becomes us and then we wonder how we became who we are.

The scary part is that we spend so many hours in heavy traffic. Isolated, sometimes alone, sometimes with a few friends, colleagues or members of our family.

It semans that the significance and personal value of others around us diminishes over time. To reach our destination fast, we beat traffic rules and ignore those around. And as we repeat this oftentimes, it starts to become our way of life - and might become our identity.

Malaysia was once known as a country where people can easily relate to each other. Everybody smiled at each other and it was a way of life to live and let go. Way back in the 1990s, traffic jams were defined at 3 cars cueing up at a traffic light.

Things have changed. Do we still care for each other? Sometimes I doubt it. I saw an accident recently. A car must have hit a motorcycle. The rider laid on the middle of the street, probably whincing in pain. The driver of the car sat inside, most likely calling for help on the mobile phone. Probably too scared to leave the car. Too many newspaper articles on how drivers were hit by other motorcyclists.

I was too far away to see the exact event. But I saw that the cars on the road did not stop. They moved around the motorcycle and the rider. May be this was an exceptional situation, but wasn't it only a few years ago when people stopped to help, even if only to change a tire?

What has become of Malaysia?

The Language and Behaviour Profile (LAB Profile) is a tool of Applied NLP. Its strenghts is based on the fact that we while listening to the words that someone uses in a specified context, we know, how the person will behave in a similar situation in the future.

There are two patterns of interest that apply strongly to the traffic situation in Kuala Lumpur.

Firstly, there is hardly any interaction between the drivers. We all drive alone or are restricted to the passengers in our car. The LAB Profile defines this as Independent Pattern. A person that exhibits such behaviour likes to be independent from others in that specific situation. Entrenched in his or her thought, they do not relate to others.

Another filter of the LAB Profile indicates the way someone communicates with others. Is the person able to give feedback, open appraisal, performance management discussion or filters important information to others.

There is a small part in the population does not care about others and what others need to do or what others think. The emphasis here is on "does not care". I see a strong parallel to the traffic situation in Kuala Lumpur as it seems that we do not care too much or at all for others around us.

Do we operate on autopilot when we move with our car in Kuala Lumpur? May be there are more parallels. There are more and more guarded communities in KualaLumpur. Isolated from the rest of the society. Individual houses have high fences, sometimes even barbed-wired. The contact with neighbours gets more and more lost.

It is a trend that needs to stop. May be it is a trend that is caused by fear. May be it is the limited time we have to communicate with others at home. After a day of work, and long hours in the traffic, people are tired and want to shut down. They are overstimulated sensorily. May be it is because we got so used to communicate via SMS, Facebook, Instant Messengers or emails that we have lost the ability to form mutual, warm and personal relationships.

I don't know.

But do you like it? Make a change now, and start smiling to your neighbours. Drop a word every now and then. Do not fight on the road but start relaxing - let others go. It is a minute, or two that you might be delayed, but at least, you kept your sanity.

I am training in NLP. We have many Certified NLP Practitioners who, in the end of the workshop say that they believe that, if the world would know and use NLP, there would be less war more peace.

A great statement. A heartmoving comment underlying the power of NLP.

But still, I believe that we all have to contribute to make this world a better place. It starts here in Kuala Lumpur. It starts with you, the one who is reading this article. Accept your responsibility to make this place a wonderful place to live again.

Thank you!!!

Science stated that they found a new way to wipe out bad memories with a new and unique methods.

In a way this is interesting.

What they describe as wiping out bad memories is done in NLP Coaching, Hypnosis or Timeline Therapy(TM) in an extremely short time. In fact, we teach this regularly in our training - so if you are interested ......

Elizabeth Phelps, an NYU psychology professor says that "This is the first study without drugs showing what we think is the permanent alteration of the memory."

I wonder how many years she is behind time? Is it really possible that she has never heard of hypnosis, NLP or Timeline Therapy(TM)?

Now, the main difference is that in NLP, Hypnosis or Timeline Therapy(TM), we have many different techniques to remove or reframe bad memories.

You see, memories of all kind are stored in the unconscious mind. Oftentimes, and in the case of negative memories, negative emotions are stored together with the memory. So when clients are in the same situation in which they learned to react so negativey, the unconscious mind, in its aim to protect the integrity of the person, releases the same heavy emotion, such as fear. But it might only be the emotion, without recollection of the actual memory. For example, those that are afraid of elevators wouldn't want to enter an elevator as it triggers fear. However, they might not remember the reason why this is the case, or recall the original situation that caused that fear. And we do not need to know about it.

In our work, this negative emotions are released when we capture the learning on these event - and we can capture it without going back to the original situation or confrontint the clients with the same situation.

This would be very unhealthy and stressful for the body. There are techniques to keep the client detached from the emotions while they gain the learning from the event. This is the main difference.

Here is the article in full:

"Bad memories wiped away with unique therapy
Experts say it’s the first time a fear-erasing technique worked in humans

By Jeanna Bryner
Senior writer

updated 8:13 a.m. ET Dec. 11, 2009

In a scientific experiment that brings to mind the memory-erasing escapade in the 2004 film "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind," scientists have blocked fearful recollections in human participants, sans drugs. The results challenge the view that our long-term memories are fixed and resistant to change.

This isn't the first time science has endeavored to understand and vanquish our fears. But it's the first time using a behavioral technique has been proven to work in humans, as opposed to a pharmacological one. A similar study was carried out in rats and reported earlier this year.

"This is the first study without drugs showing what we think is the permanent alteration of the memory," Elizabeth Phelps, an NYU psychology professor, told LiveScience. Phelps and her colleagues detail their findings this week in the journal Nature.

The findings also could have implications for treating phobias in a more permanent way, say the researchers. The current therapy of choice involves exposing patients to the feared object, though in a safe environment. This so-called extinction method works, but the fear can come back when the person is under stress.
Phelps and NYU colleague Joseph LeDoux, and their colleagues, based their study on an emerging view of long-term memory. Traditionally, scientists have thought we learn something, and then that information is sealed into our long-term memory.

Now, scientists are finding our memories get consolidated over and over again each time we retrieve a certain bit of information. Let's say we see a snake: At that moment our brains pull out past information we've stored on snakes, such as a close encounter with one. By revisiting the snake memory a portal of sorts opens, and that memory is open to manipulation.

From past studies, scientists think that the window of opportunity opens up between three and 10 minutes after spotting the snake, or its equivalent. And it stays open for at least an hour, but no longer than six hours, Phelps said.

The research team "seized the moment" by changing the fearful information before the memory got reconsolidated or sealed up again.

In the first of two experiments on humans, Phelps and her colleagues had participants view colored boxes on a computer screen, one of which was paired with a mild electric shock. This process conditioned participants to react fearfully to a blue square. They tested the participants' skin conductance, a measure of arousal, to confirm the conditioning worked.

The next day the researchers showed participants the blue square, a reminder of the object, which was intended to reactivate their memory and initiate the reconsolidation process (memory gets brought out of long-term storage and lingers in this unstable place).

This time, however, the blue square wasn't paired with a shock, a way to teach participants that the object was now "safe." Since the researchers had a rough estimate of when the reconsolidation window opened and closed, they varied the timing of this safe information.

One group saw the blue square with no shock, and 10 minutes later they viewed the blue square again with no electrical shock. Here, the thinking was that the first observation would trigger the beginning of the reconsolidation process. After 10 minutes, that window should be open and so this new information would be written over the fearful message before being sealed into long-term memory again.

Participants in the second group saw the blue square with no shock, but this wasn't followed up 10 minutes later. The scientists were using basic extinction training to create a new now-safe memory of the blue square in addition to the older fearful memory.

The third group saw the blue square with no shock and then after six hours saw it again with no shock, with the thinking that the window of vulnerability had already closed by then.

All participants left that day essentially free of their fear response to a blue square. The next day, tests showed the fear had returned in the latter two groups, but not for the participants whose blue-square fears were rewritten during reconsolidation. To see if stress would cause the fearful memory to come back, in one part of this experiment, participants received a mild shock before viewing the blue square. The fear didn't come back for the reconsolidated group.

A test of some of the participants a year later showed the reconsolidation held up, with individuals showing no fear of the blue square. The fear had returned, however, for the others who only underwent the extinction therapy.

Another experiment showed this reconsolidation method is selective and targets a particular feared object without disrupting other memories.

In Neuro Linguistic Programming, Time Line Therapy(TM) Techniques, and in Hypnosis, we teach the power of the mind and how someone can use the mind to manifest goals.

You see, the Law of Attraction works, but only, if one was able to get rid of all the baggage from the past.

What is in this baggage?

Old negative emotions such as fear of success, fear of failure, anger, rage, hurt, sadness and so on. Also, old limiting decisions.

Examples for these are "I cannot be a leader", "I cannot present", "I cannot get married", "I am not a good employee", "I am not a good husband or wife" etc. Anytime you say to yourself that you cannot do something, you encounter a limiting decision of your own.

The all time favourite is "I cannot get rich" or "I do not deserve to earn lots of money". In addition, we found the doubts: "Will I be able to survive in this economic climate"? "Will I get the promotion that I so desire?"

We all have these negative emotions and limiting decisions.

Their location: The Unconscious Mind.

Date of Installation? Throughout life, but oftentimes, negative emotions are installed when we are very, very young. Ever seen a baby crying and getting angry, because the milk bottle doesn't arrive on time? Yep - these are the first signs of installations. Can we do something about it? It is hard not to have these emotions and limiting decisions inside of us.

Can we get rid of them? Yes- as mentioned, it is possible through Time Line Therapy(tm), which was developed by Tad James of the Tad James Company. It is an easy process that allows individuals to get rid of their negative emotions and limiting decisions from the past in a few minutes. Really, that is all it takes.

We recently had a student in our NLP Practitioner class that once, a long time ago, had decided that he is not funny, and can't crack jokes. Yep, it sounds like a minor issue for most, but this was all that was left behind as "problem". In our NLP and Time Line Therapy(TM) Class, people loose their problems so very fast!

When the practitioner removed this decision, this guy started to crack jokes. Good ones, I tell you! That that require quick wit and On-The-Feet-Thinking abilities.

It is hard to explain the procedure here, but the results are really powerful. But for now, I want to invite you to just watch out for these Limiting Decisions - as mentioned, any time, you say to yourself "I cannot do this", it means that you encounter a limitation. Not to worry about this limitation. The main point here is to become aware of it , as is okay as you until now survived with it.

But ask yourself these questions regarding this limitation:

- What would happen if you do what you do not want to do currently? (e.g.; I stumble and embarrass myself)
- What is the worse thing that can happen? (e.g.; people will laugh at me)
- What will happen if you do not do the thing you do not want to do? (I stay where I am and won't develop)
- What will not happen if you do it? (now that is an interesting question)
- What will not happen if you do not do it? (another one)

Don't you just simply love questions? Really, stretch your brain around it and laugh along while you answer the questions. May be laugh at your problem. But don't take the easy way out, and re-use the same answer again and again in a re-formulated manner.

You see, awareness creates choice is one of my favourite sayings. And once you are aware of those little guys that hold you back, you can start to initiate the transformational work.

And do you know when there is no doubt anymore about your abilities? When the fear has disappeared? No more unjustified and out of hand anger? Would you not reach your goal extremely fast? This, dear reader, is the total power of NLP, Hypnosis and Timeline Therapy(TM). Just imagine the pleasure that you experience without all of these handicaps.

Don't you think that it is much easier to reach your goals in life without these? Don't you think that your life will be easier, less stressful, more fruitful and beneficial? That you can then create the life that you desire and deserve?

You can bet. So, if you really agree with me, then go ahead and do your work.

If you have a question, you may also call me - I am more than happy to help you with a tip or two. But, when you are ready, take your major step forward and come to join us in our classes.

I look forward to meeting you there!

I am obsessed with life. It probably is the best obsession to have. And I cannot get enough of it. Every day is like a blessing, full of wonders, surprises and learning. I love it!

I remember how I was a couple of years back, in a deadend job, that I had to get used to. I had great friends, colleagues, and nice bosses. Yes, more than one. I reported to the US, to Hong Kong, Singapore and Malaysia. Many different instructions to juggle, and when I did something great, I got one compliment, mainly from those that I worked with. When I messed up, I had more than one conversation, haha!

But I knew that there was something else. I didn't want to stay my whole life as an employee. I didn't want to do change management work that doesn't change a thing. I knew that there was a calling in me, a calling for more.

Then I came across NLP - it was a simple 2-days course, but I never looked back. I realised how easy it is to work with and through other people. How we can understand and influence them to initiate powerful change in awin-win situation.

How the unconscious mind, while protecting us, also holds us back with beliefs and values that have been installed a long, long time ago. What to do to talk directly to the unconscious mind. Heck, before NLP, I denied that there even is such thing as an Unconscious Mind.

Yes, I fail, even today, after nearly 5 years in whichI have been totally engaged in and with NLP. I fail daily. I feel overworked, neglect my family too often, but I know what I need to do to bring me back on track. To get back into powerful peak performance states.

I enjoy, daily, how wonderful it is to see my practitioners and clients succeed in their challenges. I gave them the tools of NLP to succeed. But there is more to that. Everybody can give you tools. But we teach how to use all the tools in every area of your life to succeed. There is nothing better than to see people transform, and realise that their problems is a thing of the past. To laugh, with us, together at their old problems.

Over the course of 5 years, we developed a pathway to success for our practitioners. I use it myself as well, of course. Pull myself out of the swamp in which I end up every now and then.

And how I fall in love with life, over, and over and over again.

This is the pure beauty of NLP. It is so much more than just confidence and better relationship. That is just the by-product.

Last month, I commented about an article and asked, if hypnosis is dangerous. The story was about a woman that sued a hypnotist on molestation charges.

Today, I found this article in Asia One which initially sounds quite good. It says that more and more patients ask doctors about hypnosis. This is probably based on the tremendous number of advertisements that offer hypnosis courses, which assist growing awareness about the tool.

The article raises the reasonable question if hypnotherapy should be regulated by the Ministry of Health. While it describes the situation in Singapore, this is a reasonable question for Malaysia as well.

There are some points that can be considered. Hypnosis is a very effective tool to assist clients overcome certain psychological issues and "install" new behaviours. It is known for weigh loss, smoking cessation, performance enhancement, anxiety- and fear removal and much more.

The challenge arises when a new hypnotherapist lays his or her hand on deeper issues such as depression, suicidal cases, Post Traumatic Stress Disorder or even other addictions. It is here where extreme care is warranted. Curiosity and the willingness to help might lead the newbie to start working with the client and then be caught off-guard by unforeseen client reactions.

In my training, we once had a woman who, in a simple exercise, went deep into her emotions and started to cry and wail uncontrollably for about 2 hours. It was a simple exercise, that was suppose to take 10 minutes. The practitioner afterwards told me that he was happy that I was around as he thought he wouldn't have been able to manage the case by himself. He only wanted to learn the tools for self-improvement and coaching in his company.

Nevertheless, all practitioners and even the woman told me after the training that it was an eye-opener and worth learning.

But this can happen and it is in these situations when experience with such cases is of utmost necessity.

The article quotes a Dr. Kwek, the Head of the Department of Psychological Medicine at Tan Tock Seng Hospital. He says that "it is better to take a strict and conservative approach when regulating its use in treating clinical conditions.

Dr Kwek said: "The technique of hypnosis may be straightforward, but we're often dealing with people with psychological issues, sometimes without obvious psychiatric symptoms. When you go into their subconscious, you may chance upon past trauma or suppressed memories.

A hypnotherapist not trained in healthcare and without psychological training may not be equipped to handle such situations and the person receiving the hypnotherapy may end up worse."

I might even agree but looking around and seeing the problems caused by "official healthcare" does not cause me to worry less. How often do we have cases where a doctor messed up? Not only in Malaysia, but worldwide?

Also, traditional (that is what I call modern) medicine is often at the end with their abilities in many dis-eases and nowadays, even doctors in the Western World look at hypnosis as the way forward.

I believe it is the usual up and down with hypnosis, as it was for the last 100 or 200 years. But its influence is growing and the research on neuroscience and discoveries on how brain and mind work clearly indicates that hypnosis has the ability to go on for a long, long time.

I am a registered NLP Trainer, registered as Trainer of Hypnosis with 2 internationally recognised institutions, registered as Coach Trainer, Language and Behaviour Profile Trainer and as Trainer of Timeline Therapy(TM) Techniques.

I say that not to impress you (are you?), but to state that these organisations are observant, and they took care that I am really alive when I registered with them.

Why do I tell this story?

Because a cat by the name of George was registered with the British Board of Neuro Linguistic Programming (BBNLP), the United Fellowship of Hypnotherapists (UFH) and the Professional Hypnotherapy Practitioner Association (PHPA).as Hypnotherapist.

May be they are unknown institutions or have limited capacities to check every application. But then, I also wonder about their registration procedures.

A doctor named O'Connell in the Lakeside Behavioral Health Center is accused of sexually molesting a co-worker under hypnosis in her second session on smoking cessation.

Court papers state the victim was hypnotized while she was lying on the bed. It is said that he took off her socks and shoes, that later led to her shirt. Apparently, the doctor continuously repeated "You are very relaxed and will not remember this when you wake up" to the alleged victim. She says he then fondled her breast. "She was aware, she said, that something was going on, she couldn't control it, couldn't stop it," said Shular who is the spokesperson for the Shelby County Sheriff's Dept..

Dr. O'Connell told detectives the woman allowed him to pull her shirt up and massage her shoulders and back with lotion. He says when he offered to take off her bra, she said no and he obliged.

It is a sad story and I feel for the woman.

But the question is: Is this possible to hypnotise someone so much that they cannot fight back, resist, wake up during a hypnosis session?

I disagree. In a hypnotic state, the client experiences heightened self-awareness, and a deep relaxation. While the sounds of the outside world might fade away, the client is always aware of what is happening around. It is always possible to wake up, stand up, and walk away.

A hypnotic state can be compared to deep meditation, yoga or relaxation. The time just before you fall asleep is hypnotic. Not when you sleep, mind you, but just before. When you start to dream. When you watch TV, you are in a hypnotic state after 20-40 seconds. When you drive your car, you go into hypnosis, if you want or not. It is called highway hypnosis.

A person in hypnosis will not do what is being suggested by the hypnotist. However, there is one rule to this. The person will only do what is suggested if the person is used to do this action. An extrovert person in a hypnotic stage show will take on the lampshade and dance on the table. A hypnotist would not even call an introvert on stage, as they would not do what is asked.

It is easy to blame hypnosis for a lot. It has been done over and over again. But may be it is also possible to blame hypnosis for something that we regret afterwards? To not take a fall?

I was hypnotised when I did this or that. I was hypnotised by the client, that is why I messed up the account. I was hypnotised by the beautiful lady or handsome man, that is why I went astray. Easy as an excuse, but the truth is, it is not possible.

Hypnosis is powerful.

It is powerful in a variety of issues. do you plan to give up smoking, or loose weight? Do you experience negative emotions such as anger, fear or hurt? Do you need to increase your performance in your organisation or in sport?

That is the true power of hypnosis. That it is helpful as a tool to overcome a variety of negative habits that have been formed when we were much younger and that still run in our unconscious mind as programmes. Hypnosis can assist in replacing these programmes with something more powerful, but only, if the client is willing and agreeable.

Then, and only then, is hypnosis useful.

Meaning. What is it? It is what we attribute to certain events. Something happens around us and we evaluate it. Either in a conversation with others or through our Inner Voice.

Now, it is the end of Ramadan and over one billion of Muslims celebrate. Soon we have Christmas and then Chinese New Year. In between we have Deepavali.

Major festivals of the main religions.

Is there a common trait aside of the date in the calendar?

What are you going to do during the festivals. What is the meaning of these festivals to you?

Don't just say that you celebrate. How do you celebrate? Is the celebration just abou food? Presents that you give or receive? May be even the money that you donate or give away?

Or is it deeper? Something like self reflection? Going inside and reflecting on you, your action? May be going to the church, mosque or temple to pray and find some salvation or inner peace?

Contemplating on what to do over the next year or feeling clear and cleaned to take on new challenges?

I was speaking at a conference called Client Relationship Management, Retention and Acquisition.

As usual, I spoke about Neuro Linguistic Programming (NLP) and how behaviours and values impact how companies and the individuals work inside deal with customers.

My topic was "Transforming the Client Relationships through Neuro Linguistic Programming (NLP).

So it was very different from other topics as it is not technical. I strongly believe that anybody, or any companies, can start to transform their relation with customers by knowing how the customer or client ticks.

Think about it - doesn't any customer relation start inside the mind of people? And how they relate to each other?

Aside of my topic, there were the technical topics on CRM, but also the learning on softskills. Right now, I am listening to values creation inside a company. Ask yourself, what is the mindset of your employees running your organisation - yes, they run your organisations.

Do they see themselves as employee or as a CEO running their life, their job, their career. How do they look or speak about your organisation? Where do you want to be in your organisation in 12 months, 3 years or 5 years from now? Still at the same job (which probably means that you lost your drive and on your way out), or totally different job tasks, different company, may be even in your own company.

Now, the interesting part is that participants, such as me, started to use FAcebook to communicate with each other about the conference. While the entries were kind of joking, it was interactive, and partially related to the topic.

Now imagine the possibilities. We can check out if, what the speaker says, is verifiable. We talk about the speaker's topic. We might mention his or her name.

It is instant marketing, instant communication.

What are people saying about you online?

He did it.

The French Spiderman Alain Robert finally managed to climb Malaysia's 88 Storey Petronas Tower. It was his third attempt, after two trials, one in 1997 and one in 2007, failed.

He never gave up and he climbed to the top. He is quoted as saying "With due respect to Malaysia, I came to finish something. Climbing the Petronas all the way to the top is one of my dreams." He describes himself as determined but also "a little bit stubborn".

Fascinating guy. I wonder what goes on in his mind - "What is the next step" or, "I hope I don't slip." (This is a rethorical question, lah!!

Because this is what we do in our NLP classes in Malaysia. We teach people to create a mindset of excellence.

I personally don't like the article too much, but that is my humble opinion. However, it is worth sharing.

Messing with your head: Does the man behind Neuro-Linguistic Programming want to change your life – or control your mind?

Sunday, 23 August 2009

You got a problem? Go see Richard Bandler. As the founder of the controversial, multi-billion-dollar therapy NLP, he can get inside your head, and quick. But how did a former cocaine user and murder suspect become a guru to over 30,000 people in the UK? Kate Burt signs up for a session

How, exactly, does one go about interviewing a man who has dedicated his life's work to the art of mind control? Are difficult questions going to be swept under a carpet of charm? Can his answers be trusted? Will this piece, mysteriously, write itself as a glowing appraisal?

All of which are valid considerations in advance of meeting Richard Bandler. Bandler is the American co-creator of the modern self-help phenomenon Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP), a discipline developed to quick-fix life's problems by "reprogramming" one's brain. In crude terms, NLP explores the relationships between how we think (neuro), how we communicate (linguistic) and our patterns of behaviour and emotions (programmes). The idea is that, by studying these relationships, people can adopt more successful ways of thinking, communicating, feeling and behaving.

Even if you think you don't know much about NLP, the chances are you'll have witnessed it at work in instant phobia cures, shouty-titled management-skills books, "life coaching" and those unsettling conversations with sales people who seem to be mirroring your every move (because they quite possibly are – it's a classic NLP trick). Bandler has mentored Britain's favourite change-your-life hypnotist, Paul McKenna, and his work has influenced illusionist and master mindbender Derren Brown. Bandler himself still teaches NLP regularly, and claims to be able to "erase" traumatic memories, improve your relationships and even ' "cure" schizophrenia and paralysis (he taught himself to walk again using NLP after a stroke put him in a wheelchair).

Since Bandler invented NLP in the 1970s, it has grown into a multi-billion-dollar industry, influencing the way many people now understand psychology and psychotherapy (cognitive behavioural therapy, the increasingly popular "fast-track" style of psychotherapy, shares certain principles with NLP). But what inspired NLP's founding father to create an alternative to traditional psychotherapy, and does he practise what he preaches? What, too, of NLP's patients – or "students" as Bandler prefers to call them – are they in safe hands?

Some people don't think so: critics have accused Bandler of everything from running a cult, failing to provide scientific evidence for his claims and brainwashing his clients. He's admitted drug abuse and even stood trial for murder. But in NLP circles Bandler is hailed as a sort of Messiah; indeed, while researching this piece, I lost count of the number of times I was told by its proponents that "NLP changed my life". Which is surprising, perhaps, given our national, deep-rooted suspicion of anyone too happy or self-assured, and antipathy towards motivational speakers, self-help gurus and the sorts of people who run "positivity workshops". And NLP practitioners – whose vocabulary is littered with phrases such as "installing strategies", "behavioural technologies", "cybernetics", "deletion", "content reframing" and "hypnosis" – seem scarier than most. Yet NLP is big business in the UK. The movement's not-for-profit representative body here claims that there are "at least 30,000 qualified NLP practitioners in the UK".

"It amazes me some of the stories I hear about myself," says Bandler, 59, a smartly dressed stocky man with piercing blue eyes and longish grey hair, a little thin on top, wearing a bulky gold and gemstone ring. I meet him in a bland, corporate-style hotel in Orlando, Florida, where he is speaking at a nine-day course – one of many he runs each year – to teach others the "tools" of NLP. "One student told me someone had said, 'Don't go to Richard, all he wants to do is control everyone.'" Another critic, he says, claimed Bandler beat up his students. He sniffs briskly: "But all I have ever tried to do is make people happier."

Bandler's ideas were revolutionary. In the wake of the Summer of Love, as a university student in Santa Cruz, California, he joined forces with a young linguistics professor called John Grinder. Pooling their passions – neuroscience, Noam Chomsky, hypnosis and early information technology – they created the NLP blueprint and began gathering case studies. The over-arching motivation was scorn for traditional schools of psychotherapy – a burgeoning American industry at the time. "How is forcing a person to relive a bad experience going to help them get over it? It's just cruel," says Bandler.

Each day of the course, Bandler leads the morning session with a demonstration and a talk (Grinder is long since out of the picture; the pair acrimoniously parted ways following a bitter copyright lawsuit in 1997 – proof that even NLP experts don't have solutions for everything). At 10am on the dot, the hotel conference-room doors open to a loud blast of emphatically upbeat synth music: our call to action. As students amble towards their seats, some do jiggly little dance steps, others clap to the beat; there are sporadic whoops of enthusiasm. Of the 100-odd here for the course, people have travelled from as far afield as England, Japan, Australia, Turkey and Baghdad. Others have volunteered to be course assistants, paying their own flights and accommodation, just to be close to Bandler. (Which is not all that surprising when one considers that "students" can pay up to £10,000 for one of his intimate, three-day courses.) I'm intrigued to see him in action.

"How many of you are not artistic?" he asks from the stage, Hands are raised. "Is that because you weren't born with the 'art gene'?" It's a leading question. A table on the stage is kitted out with brushes, paints and paper and four non- artistic volunteers are plucked to sit at it, then put into a trance. "Every time you hear yourself saying 'I'm not the kind of person who...'," he murmurs to the budding artists, "I want you to laugh because it's just like masturbating one stroke at a time, it'll never get you there..." This is typical of the way Bandler talks. Crude quips, detailed anecdotes and seemingly random digressions spill out relentlessly, punctuated by sound effects, imitations and expletives. There's the one about how he punched a man ("Thwack!") who hit his own daughter because she was speaking to invisible angels (the girl was cured, naturally, by Bandler); the smut (the following day on stage he'll motivate a young man to clear out his garage by thinking about breasts) and the tales to discredit psychotherapists (cue the account of the time he smuggled rubber snakes into a schizophrenic's shower at a mental hospital to prove that he didn't require drugs for sanity, but simply the opportunity to differentiate between hallucinated and actual serpents).

"You all know my cure for schizophrenia is to alter reality not hallucinations," he says to his audience. "A lot of patients with mental issues simply don't have proper strategies." He's a little scary, but his thinking is persuasive. And it seems to be working on stage, too – the budding artists are – surprise surprise – confidently expressing themselves via the medium of acrylic paint. There had been similar turnarounds at the end of yesterday's session: the woman from Baghdad who thanked Bandler for "giving [her] life back" after he'd erased a horrific image from her mind; the delegate who had been petrified of heights but, by day three, was embracing several of Orlando's most dramatic rollercoasters. It's like watching a cross between Bernard Manning and Jesus.

Bandler doesn't work alone on these seminars. Also travelling with him are husband and wife John and Kathleen LaValle, who run his NLP training business and met Bandler around 20 years ago when they took one of his courses. John, a corporate coach, who specialises in NLP for business, is an imposing New Jersey native with the thick Sopranos accent to match, a ponytail and a fondness for Hawaiian shirts and Gothic bling. He fell for NLP while searching for a "better way to train" explains his lovely wife Kathleen (blonde with a streak of purple – NLP is also all about recognising the individual). She joined John after noticing that "communication at home really improved" since he encountered Bandler. Her sweet nature seems strangely at odds with the fact that one of her specialist areas is "sales and influence" – the area of NLP that involves techniques such as "mirroring" and "pacing" (matching the way someone else communicates, essentially, to get what you want from them).

"Richard may not be famous to the average person – but if you know NLP, he's a celebrity," confides Kathleen over a glass of Merlot later that evening. "He's the Tom Cruise of the industry." Given his Messiah-like reputation, he must get some interesting fans, I suggest... "Uh-huh. There are some pretty whacked-out types who'll go up to his [hotel]

room at three or four in the morning," she says, "or claim to be an old friend and try to get his number. We have to be careful." Some people also want to hassle him, she adds, particularly on religious grounds. "They think that fate is something you can't control. They get angry."

In life, Bandler has certainly wanted to control his own fate, it seems. "My mother is a wonderful person," he says of his childhood, "but she married a few bad drunks." He grew up in a tough part of New Jersey and says that, as a child, he had "every bone in his body broken by adults". His musician father "just took off one day" and they've never had a relationship. He sounds like a psychotherapist's dream. Is it his bad childhood that gave him the drive to help other people to get over difficulties? "Excuse me," he says, leaning forward, indignant. "The fact I was beaten up by adults as a child means I've never laid a hand on my kids. This nonsense about if your parents are alcoholics you're going to be an alcoholic – that's a bad post-hypnotic suggestion to live by."

But he does talk a lot about violence, I suggest. "I can be violent," he says bluntly. "If someone attacks me I will hurt them – and any person who's a pussy is frightened by that. I've popped a few shrinks, but I've never hit one hard enough to knock him down. [And] I've slapped a client across the face – just to wake him up, but I never hit 'em hard enough to leave a mark. In the supermarket I whacked some guy with a can of peas – but he was beating the crap out of a six-year-old kid." One can't imagine it helped his case when, in 1988, Bandler was charged with the murder of a woman – Corine Christensen, a prostitute and NLP student – shot dead in the face with Bandler's gun, while only he and a friend, allegedly his cocaine dealer, were present. The publicity surrounding the case painted him as a nasty piece of work.

"What pisses me off," he says, is that none of this has anything to do with any of the good work I've done." Bandler says he was set up for the murder (and, accordingly, the court acquitted him – "in 20 minutes!" he points out). "And yes, I took coke for a while. But I also went on a binge of Hershey bars for a while too, and I was addicted to peanuts for a year, probably far more than I was to cocaine." He doesn't shy away from discussing the case, and yet he has a way of being "upfront" about things that is quite disconcerting.

One thing (among many, it seems) that winds Bandler up is when people criticise him for not being perfect. "Well, I've got news for you," he says, "if I wasn't this imperfect I wouldn't have had room for improvement." He used to get irritated when people pulled him up for smoking – a habit NLP is popular for ridding people of. "I knew how to stop, I just didn't want to!" he says. "I'm not trying to get people to be enlightened. I'm not a guru. I'm not even terribly sociable, to tell you the truth." This is also part of the reason he says that he shies away from television: "I want to be able to walk down the street." Then he smiles: "Paul [McKenna] loves all that, though. The autographs, his phone constantly ringing. He's just moved to the Hollywood Hills and it suits him."

The two met after McKenna came along to a seminar and was so impressed that he immediately booked out his diary for three weeks to complete the whole course. "He was a good student – and it's really changed his career," says Bandler. "He used just to be a stage hypnotist – now he's a real agent for change." Bandler tells a story of the time they went for dinner in London and McKenna was glued to his mobile. "In the end I went to the bathroom and called him – it was the only way I could get his attention."

It's hard to steer Bandler off rambling anecdotes that don't a) belittle psychotherapists, and b) illustrate the successes of his work – but when you do, he talks affectionately about his family and how he feels his greatest achievement – far greater than inventing NLP – was his long marriage (to his late wife, Polly, who died after a long illness eight years ago) and raising two well-balanced children who don't need to use NLP. He beams when he describes how lucky he is to have recently been remarried, to Glenda, a good-looking doctor who has "whipped [him] into shape".

But just when you think you're getting to know Bandler, he's off on a tangent: safety on the streets of New York, John Lennon's murder, the time he "installed" vegetable phobias into a room full of vegans because they hadn't let him eat meat all day... Talking to Bandler one to one is much like listening to him on stage. "I've no secrets, nothing to hide," he cheerfully points out (I'm no NLP expert, but surely that's a phrase that should ring linguistic alarm bells).

And yet, open as he appears to be, there's a sense that the stuff you hear is somehow a well-managed distraction from the stuff you don't. Which, of course, given his vocation, is precisely what one would expect.

Back in the UK, I track down a few Brits who've been "Bandlered", hoping for some dirt. No luck: they are universally evangelical. "He put me in a trance," recalls one woman. "I don't remember what happened, I just remember Richard saying: 'The floodgates of happiness are now open.' Then he touched my face and from that moment all of the rubbish of my life suddenly went," she says. "It was weird."

It's a common reaction. In Orlando, over a conference break for lunch, there was a moment when a concerned-looking student, also a highly successful business coach, came over having seen me scribble down some of Bandler's rhetoric. "I'm not a groupie," she began, "but I just wanted to say that when I first heard Richard speak – all that sexual innuendo and stuff, I was offended and appalled. But it's deliberate, you know. It's all to create a heightened state – a state in which you're more aware. All the while he's talking, he's changing brain chemistry and implanting ideas. Since I've done you a favour," she continued carefully, "perhaps you might be kind enough to send me a copy of your piece."

It was probably a perfectly innocent request, but it was impossible not to wonder whether I was being NLP-ed.

We all want to succeed.

But we, in Asia Mind Dynamics, know, that the participation in a Neuro Linguistic Programming and a Time Line Therapy(TM) Training is intense and sometimes exhausting. The days are long but then, the changes are dramatic. What seemed once hard to achieve suddenly becomes achievable. We have seen it over and over again. Allow me to give you some headlines.

In our NLP Trainings in Malaysia, we have assisted people in manifesting their goals:

- A person dreamed of becoming a Datin and reached her goals. Moreover, she is now one of Malaysia's Top Women;

- A former student who did not think much of himself turned out to become a serial entrepreneur and will soon cooperate with us

- A dissatisfied employee dreamed of becoming a millionaire, set the foundation for it in our training and now has reached her goal

- A company that sent about 15 senior managers to our training over a period of time managed to half their employee turnover - imagine the amount of money saved!

- A aspiring author did not know how to continue as his publisher sat on the draft for too long. He visualised and embedded his goals into the unconscious mind and can now be found on the top-selling list in MPH

The list is not complete, but we have realised that NLP Training is not just about becoming more confident and feeling better about yourself. We have learned that it is possible to show you the pathway and door to success.

How did it happen?

Over the years that we operate as one of the NLP Training companies in Malaysia, we have had the chance to put together a training manual and process that clearly is distinguished and targeted to assisting you. Sure, it might look similar to other training companies in the market, but it is the way we present it and the additional stuff that comes aside during the training, that somehow allows you to go from limitation to success in just a few days.

Well, we experienced practitioners that had their first breakthrough just a few hours into the training. And we break our own records.
