Schoolbells are ringing
School has started again for my boy, who is now entering Standard 5. Once again, it is calling for a wake-up call at 5.45 AM for me, and about 6.00 AM for my boy. A bit of a struggle - "5 more minutes, please", before he drags his body to the shower.
Traffic jams are back again and I am in the middle of it. I don't like it, I never liked them in the first place. A total waste of time, especially considering the fact, that some Malaysians are extremely good in participating to create their own traffic jams by cutting in in front of the queue. I still believe that this is totally inconsiderate and despite all my NLP, I am nurturing an anger against those who believe that they can steal my time, by cutting in in front of me. another point I don't like (sorry about that, but it needed saying :)).
It is amazing, how the traffic has evolved over the past couple of months, during the holidays, and that a few new construction sites are forcing the traffic to slow down again.
Not all school books are ready or available to the parents, despite the fact, that school has started already.
After a short chat with some teachers, I was waiting in the cafeteria for my wife to have some breakfast, and my thoughts drifted back to my own school days.
How excited I was in school, at least for the first two days. My dreams of making things better, improving myself in certain subjects in school, new teachers, old teachers, new friends and old friends and woes. New subjects to learn, slowly phased in, not in the speed as it is done here. Chemistry, physics, biology. I loved to read history books and adored the Roman empire. There was a time you could ask me any questions regarding any of the Caesars or periods, and I was able to answer them. I was good!!!
In the beginning, or teachers distributed our schoolbooks - not as it is here in Malaysia the case. Browsing through the material that we were going to learn. Some interesting, others boring or frightening. All this new formulas.
Schoolbells ringing and kids quickly entering the schoolroom. It fully reminded me as well about my own school time. The same sound, and the same trepidation of what expect.
The same feeling inside again - as if I were young again. I nearly got up and ran to the schoolrooms myself. This twitch inside, that the break is over and class began again.
It is, what we call, an anchor in NLP or Neuro Linguistic Programming. An anchor is an external stimulus that causes an internal reaction. Think of a song that you like, your favourite tune. How does this make you feel, inside? May be there are other songs that make you feel sad?
What about the ringing of your handphone? How do you respond to it? Do you answer immediately? Or the texting and receiving of messages. How about that? Are you one of those who constantly check their handphone for new messages? Did you get warm feelings when you saw a Christmas tree? Same here, it threw me back to my Mum's place, and I could nearly smell the Christmas cookies under the tree.
These are all anchors.
Some are actually saying that we are made to react to anchors, throughout the day. What happens, when you read a sad story? Or what make you happy? We are reacting internally to external events. All of us. Some of us actually express our internal feelings to some external in our blogs. Just read how some react and express themselves.
It is actually possible to support your emotions throughout the day through certain stimuli. You can direct positive emotions, and you can identify those anchors, that cause you negative feelings. Remove those or rectify them to make you feel better. An example could be a song that causes you to feel sadness, or even a task that upsets you. May be you can delegate this task to someone who likes it?
Can you think of a negative anchor, or is it possible to identify positive anchors now?

The secret power of perfume
Who doesn't like perfume? Nothing nicer than getting the nice smell of a good perfume in your nose. Total attraction, and the willingness to let go.
Perfume by nature is sublime. It bypasses a lot of different guards in the mind and just enters the subconscious mind. It reminds us of good times, and may be even of some bad times. Mostly so, of the good times, at least for me.
Smell is so powerful, because we as humans are more trained to see and hear and the sense of smells has long been gone, consciously.
Perfume is the new weapon in the South Korean election campaign of Lee Myung-bak, the leading candidate. "A team of supporters of presidential frontrunner Lee Myung-bak has been secretly spraying a perfume called "Great Korea" at his rallies. He will send volunteers to voting booths on December 19 to ensure the same scent is drifting through the air.
"It will remind people of the identity of Lee Myung-bak. The concept of the perfume is hope, victory and passion," said Oh Chi-woo of the conservative Grand National Party's culture and arts team."
That's powerful - if the association is positive, of course. If someone was at the rally and he or she actually doesn't like the candidate, well, it will remind him negatively.
But Lee Myung-bak doesn't have to worry!!
He leads his closest opponent by more than 30 points. (Reuters Article)
In NLP, we call this anchoring, and anchoring is based on the concept that an external stimulus triggers an internal response. In this sense, the perfume is supposed to remind the voters of Lee Myung-bak. We all have anchors in our life, positive ones and negatives. It currently is Chrismas period, and the sight of Christmas trees reminds me of my Christmas celebrations with my family back in Germany. I nearly can smell the cookies and the cake. Others have music anchored into their neurology - songs that make you sad, and songs that empower you. Anchors are not restricted to things only, but can also work as reaction to people. Think of your boss, and check, inside of you, what kind of feelings come up? These are the anchors in our life! Powerful.

NLP, the Circle of Excellence and helping a friend
NLPu defines anchoring as the "process of associating an internal response with some external environmental or mental trigger."
It works like Pavlov and the dogs: Someone is ringing a bell and the doggie knows that this is the sign that his meal is served. The saliver is running, basically.
Everybody is anchored to certain concepts - you see a red traffic light in front of you and know that you have to stop (well, not necessarily in Malaysia, but this is another story, hehe).
Others could be the boss that scolds you constantly, and instinctively, you dig in your heels, when you hear him or her approaching.
A third example is music - how many times do you hear a song that makes you happy, or other songs that make you sad, the moment you hear the tune starting? "Darling, remember this song, this was the one playing when you kissed me the first time?" - I guess you get the hint.
Now, Neuro Linguistic Programming (NLP) is using the concept of anchoring in a manner that helps us to have strength when we need strength. This can be any time or when you want to have strength. Because, and this is a big because - we are also very often anchored to something negative. Think of your boss, your ex-lover, the cheating husband, the company that fired you, the area where you got robbed, the taxis that cheat you all the time, the shop that sold you the bad product. Basically, the list is endless.
More reasonable is to think of stage fright, fear of interviews, performance appraisals, the boss is calling you, your client is always angry when you deliver late or the cockroach that you cannot stand. Do you get headache, butterflies in your stomach just thinking of it?
These are negative anchors in our life!!
There are plenty of tools available in NLP to get into a state or a mindset to make you feel better when you enter situations that need powerful strength.
My favourite is called Circle of Excellence. A friend of mine, who is studying in the UK and has been invited for an interview has asked me to give her a tip on how to get rid of her nervousness. I wrote the mail and then thought that this is useful to be published here as well. So here it goes.
"Imagine a Circle in front of you, in any size you like. Colour it if you want, let it circling (mine is blue and is circling around like a ring of fire), put in noise or songs that you like - anything that makes it beautiful and very appealing to you.
Next, put in all the resources you need - for me, I remember times, when I presented and was successful, the times I succeeded with my NLP and coaching, times when I was successful in other areas. Something that made me feel good, basically.
So, what I am doing is putting in the right resources - confidence, power, energy, passion. This works for me.
Then I am stepping in - it is like a bath full of powerful solutions. I then really imagine something like a shower of power and resourcefulness and enjoy the feeling. Standing taller and stronger and really enjoy the feeling.
Initially, I put in one resources, such as confidence, then power, then, whatever I want. I repeat the process when required, until I really feel good - stepping out, getting more resources, stepping in etc.
In the beginning, it took me a while to really get started with it and feel the power- everytime I needed it, I had to imagine the ring by standing somewhere and stepping into it. Now, I just need to imagine a blue circling ring of fire in front of me. That's it for me - it works and I change immediately.
It might sound funny, but this is what is anchoring in NLP. Pavlov for beginners. We are all anchored to something in our life and more often than not, it is negative. So why not create something that is positive?"
Tell me - was this useful?
