Watch the impressions you make on clients

Quite often, I am attending talks and workshops, including breakfast meetings. There was one such meeting yesterday. I enjoy it because it allows to meet new people and gain new thoughts. Topic of the talk is not always important, because there is always additional value that I can capture.

Interestingly, when the call came to take your seat, I ended up on a table with quite an interesting mix of people.

Three people inclusive me, on the table were involved in NLP and as such, promoted their company. Another person was a coach as per his business card and one promoted Dale Carnegie Trainings.

The rest were "normal people" from companies.

It was such a pleasure to observe the different style of how the trainers worked subconsciously. One of them was constantly yawning, looked bored, no facial expressions indicating interest for the speaker and was constantly out for incoming phone calls. The coach was nearly falling asleep. The next one took notes, but kept talking to his neighbour.

This reflected on me as well. I realised that every now and then, I was also checking my handphone. It threw me back to last months, when I was sitting in a similar meeting and had to answer calls regarding my advertisement.

We always believe that no one observes us or sees our little habits. But do not forget, they are picked up. Someone sees and forms his or her own impressions. And first impressions count. They can make or break a deal or a relationship, heck, even a close knitted marriage.

So, how do you behave in meetings, seminars and others social gatherings. Is the incoming message on the phone more important than the person opposite of you? Or are you impressive and actively working on your impressions that you make? Are you connecting with others that are introduced to you or just interested in their company or position, because they are a lead for new business? Be serious about who you are and how you communicate to others - in words, physiology and your outfit.
