Schoolbells are ringing

School has started again for my boy, who is now entering Standard 5. Once again, it is calling for a wake-up call at 5.45 AM for me, and about 6.00 AM for my boy. A bit of a struggle - "5 more minutes, please", before he drags his body to the shower.

Traffic jams are back again and I am in the middle of it. I don't like it, I never liked them in the first place. A total waste of time, especially considering the fact, that some Malaysians are extremely good in participating to create their own traffic jams by cutting in in front of the queue. I still believe that this is totally inconsiderate and despite all my NLP, I am nurturing an anger against those who believe that they can steal my time, by cutting in in front of me. another point I don't like (sorry about that, but it needed saying :)).

It is amazing, how the traffic has evolved over the past couple of months, during the holidays, and that a few new construction sites are forcing the traffic to slow down again.

Not all school books are ready or available to the parents, despite the fact, that school has started already.

After a short chat with some teachers, I was waiting in the cafeteria for my wife to have some breakfast, and my thoughts drifted back to my own school days.

How excited I was in school, at least for the first two days. My dreams of making things better, improving myself in certain subjects in school, new teachers, old teachers, new friends and old friends and woes. New subjects to learn, slowly phased in, not in the speed as it is done here. Chemistry, physics, biology. I loved to read history books and adored the Roman empire. There was a time you could ask me any questions regarding any of the Caesars or periods, and I was able to answer them. I was good!!!

In the beginning, or teachers distributed our schoolbooks - not as it is here in Malaysia the case. Browsing through the material that we were going to learn. Some interesting, others boring or frightening. All this new formulas.

Schoolbells ringing and kids quickly entering the schoolroom. It fully reminded me as well about my own school time. The same sound, and the same trepidation of what expect.

The same feeling inside again - as if I were young again. I nearly got up and ran to the schoolrooms myself. This twitch inside, that the break is over and class began again.

It is, what we call, an anchor in NLP or Neuro Linguistic Programming. An anchor is an external stimulus that causes an internal reaction. Think of a song that you like, your favourite tune. How does this make you feel, inside? May be there are other songs that make you feel sad?

What about the ringing of your handphone? How do you respond to it? Do you answer immediately? Or the texting and receiving of messages. How about that? Are you one of those who constantly check their handphone for new messages? Did you get warm feelings when you saw a Christmas tree? Same here, it threw me back to my Mum's place, and I could nearly smell the Christmas cookies under the tree.

These are all anchors.

Some are actually saying that we are made to react to anchors, throughout the day. What happens, when you read a sad story? Or what make you happy? We are reacting internally to external events. All of us. Some of us actually express our internal feelings to some external in our blogs. Just read how some react and express themselves.

It is actually possible to support your emotions throughout the day through certain stimuli. You can direct positive emotions, and you can identify those anchors, that cause you negative feelings. Remove those or rectify them to make you feel better. An example could be a song that causes you to feel sadness, or even a task that upsets you. May be you can delegate this task to someone who likes it?

Can you think of a negative anchor, or is it possible to identify positive anchors now?
