Misplaced responsibility and the case of budget hotels
Hm - let's talk about responsibility.
Responsibility is defined as "1) something you ought to do because it is morally or socially right, 2) a duty to be in charge of someone or something."
Got it?
It means that someone, you, me or another person or group, takes care that everything is going to be alright, and nothing is set out to be going wrong.
Have you read the New Straits Times today, about the death traps in Malaysian budget hotels (not all, but many, okay!!). They are old, and lack basic facilities to assist hotel guests in case of emergencies.
The NST found out that "Most do not provide a fire escape route, with the operators saying that as the hotels were two-storey pre-war buildings, guests could easily jump out of the window to safety."
Further, they quote Association president Syed Nasarudin Syed Abdul Hadi as saying that "operators could not meet the standards similar to that imposed on the big boys as they were running on a low budget.
As such, he called for the department to relax the stringent fire safety rules on these establishments.
"Association secretary-general Leong Pui Kun said most budget hotels in pre-war buildings used to be homes.
They were turned into budget hotels as the area had undergone transformation. He said with five or six rooms in a budget hotel, guests could escape through the window in case of emergency.
“But then again, cases of budget hotels on fire are rare.”
Hah - do you see what I see? Do we really need another catastrophy, more people dying, just because of financial issues?
Malaysia currently discusses about the safety equipment in ferries, after the recent accident. Before, there was the discussion about bus accidents and increased controls.
Now the budget hotels.
When are owners, or operators are taking responsibility for their business by securing the premises or equipment?
Do we need more accidents?
