Has Najib taken NLP? Demands mindset change of civil servants

Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak stated today that civil servants should condition their minds to work harder and longer to increase the country’s productivity.

While I didn't quite agree with the whole logic of his statement - longer working hours don't necessarily equate to higher productivity and might cause stress, or result in lesser time spend with family and - I was impressed with his statement made a little further down the article.

Here he states that there were several techniques that could be used to change people’s behaviour and habits. One of them was mind reframing.

“I want to share with you how Royal Prof Ungku Aziz uses this technique to avoid consuming sugar.

“He sees sugar as poison in his mind and refrains from taking it. I have tried this technique myself and now take tea without sugar,” Najib said.

Now, languaging is a big part in neuro linguistic programming or NLP. Hey, it is our middle name!!! So there are plenty of reframing techniques. Two of the techniques are taught in the NLP Practitioner Training (mine is coming soon!!!), and more are taught in the Master Practitioner (get ready for it in the end of 2007!). In the NLP Master Practitioner, we call it Sleight of Mouth (some newer schools call it Mindlines, but it is the same) and teach 16 different ways to reframe statements.

It is fun - you see, the equation goes like this. Some external behaviour or event causes an internal reaction or state, as such EB/ IS. Basically, it is about beliefs, because what is the reaction inside of me is nothing more than the expression of a certain belief.

Such as - You training is expensive (EB) and that means that you don't care about your participants (IS). It is a frame, because how would you know that I don't care about you when my training is expensive? May be it is expensive because the quality of the training is way beyond what you expect, and I serve you way beyond the training as well with different and additional techniques, group meetings and offering you re-sits in my other trainings. I go out of my way to help you succeed.

Basically, reframing is what we do everyday anyway, but then, with NLP you learn to do this purposely.

In the meantime I congratulate our Deputy Prime Minister and Royal Prof Ungku Aziz to the usage of this great, great technique.
