The NLP Presuppositions: The Meaning of a Communication Is The Result You Get
Another of the wonderful NLP Presuppositions is that "The Meaning Of The Communication Is The Result You Get."
This is very closely related to the earlier on on “The Map Is Not The Territory” as so often, we operate from our own perspective.
Have you ever seen the tourist who is asking the local for directions and doesn't understand the response? Very often, what we then do is to simply speak louder. AS if the tourist is deaf and the solution is to raise the volume.
The same with parents. They talk to their kids and the kids don't understand the reasoning behind the parent's statement. Then, the parents get louder - clean your room, do your homework, blablabla. Louder and louder, but - and that is the funny thing - always the same statement.
Hey - my apologies, but I didn't get it the first time, and if you speak louder, I still won't get it.
Why? Because it is like you are trying to do the same thing over and over and over again. It doesn't work!! When something doesn't work - change the way you go about it.
I sometimes like to substitute communication with another word - like with education. The outcome of the education is the child you get. Boy, this is empowering and revealing.
Or - the outcome of a society's behaviour is the Mat Rembits you get. How is that?
Why do I say so? Because something goes wrong when you get an outcome that is not desired.
It is easier to say - the outcome of the sales approach is the result you get - this is easier, right?
But it still is the same!!! If I get something that I don't like as a result of an action of mine, I have to change the way to go about it. Otherwise, I will get the same result, over and over again!!
What does it mean? Well, it means that you, as the initiator of something are absolutely, 100% responsible for your action. There is no excuse when something goes in a different direction. If something goes into the wrong direction, then it is your responsibility to change the way you go about it. This makes NLP also different from "normal communication" models, because these models state that the outcome of a communication is the responsibility of the sender and the receiver. NLP gives the communicator 100% of the responsibility.
Easy, right?
So - how can you apply this principle to your life? Something that you can learn in my NLP Practitioner Course in January in Malaysia.
