The NLP Presuppositions - There is no failure only feedback
The guiding principles for NLP, something that you can also call guiding beliefs system, are called presuppositions. One of those endless words in NLP that are hard to understand to the “normal folks” out there, who never heard of NLP before.
As said, presuppositions are defined as the guiding lights of NLP, the belief that NLP-lers carry with them around when dealing with the world and others :).
Because, a belief per se is nothing else than what someone holds true. So, that means, what I think is true, is true for me - as such, an NLPler holds such beliefs for true as well.
A long time back, people believed the earth was flat, or that the sun circled around the earth. That was true for them. It changed over time for them as well, and that means, that beliefs are changeable.
In the meantime, it is important to hold on to beliefs that empower the individual, and don’t restrict the individual – this means, the empowerment of the individual that I am interacting with as well as myself.
There are more than 15 beliefs that govern NLP – and over the next couple of days and weeks, and before the training begins, I want to go through those and explain them, one by one.
“There Is No Failure, Only Feedback”
One of the great beliefs of NLP is that “There Is No Failure, Only Feedback”. What a great belief to have. Because, hey, how often do we focus on how we failed in our ventures. How often do we give up, believing, that we will never get it? That all attempts of trying are useless anyway, because we learnt that we will fail. We are learning machines, and naturally, we attempt to find ways to achieve our destiny, our goals!
How often did you start something and lots of people around you said that this is not possible, stop wasting your energy, or your money, do something different, it will never work out – and you still did it?
May be you failed in an earlier venture, but going forward, did you incorporate the feedback? Or did you kept doing the same thing, over and over again?
If you incorporated the learning, and changed the way you went about it, well, then you had a learning, not a failure!!! And even if you didn’t change the way too much, I surely believe that you changed something the next time you went about it?
Like – you want to talk to this gorgeous boy or girl, and the first time around, it just didn’t turn out well. Did you try the same “trick” the next time again? Surely not – something changed, and may be, you managed to get to meet this gorgeous person. Or remember Thomas Edison and the invention of electricity – did he give up? No, he said he learnt ways on how NOT to generate what he intended to generate – electricity. He kept going, attempting new ways, and learnt what not to do again, until he found what he was looking for.
Imagine if you turn the saying – there is no failure, only feedback around? What would happen? There is only failure, no feedback? Gosh, how many babies would refuse to walk, when they would know that they actually fail, and didn’t learn how to walk?
So, don’t beat yourself up, the next time, something doesn’t work – think of it as learning and how you can improve on it to get to the desired state that you actually want to achieve.
Why not wearing the coat of this belief for a while and see how it fits you? Why not seeing the world and the experiences that you have through the eyes of this presupposition?
