No shopping in KL

That is actually quite interesting - and says a lot about different perspectives of different people from across the globe.

While I was in Redang, I met this couple from Sweden, or, better, my mum - she talked most with them. Later, she related to me that this elderly couple was quite disappointed with Kuala Lumpur, because there isn't any place where they can go shopping.

Excuse me, I said? KL is full of shopping malls. And here is the major difference. There are malls here. I don't know if there are malls in Sweden, but this Swedish couple wasn't aware that all the shopping in Malaysia or at least KL is happening in malls. It is highly likely that they have pedestrian areas with shops along the road where you can just drop in to shop, look around and browse.

So what they see when they drive through town from the airport to their hotel are streets that are not really filled up with shops enticing tourists to stop and go shopping. Of course, they could have asked in the hotel, but fact is, they didn't. Now I wonder, how many tourists are out there, coming from anywhere, and don't know that shopping in Kuala Lumpur happens in shopping malls?

It surely is not their fault or lack of interest - it is lack of communication, and lack of information.

It is easy to take things for granted - malls are big and huge and clearly visible. They must be seen by anyone. But if your brain is not accustomed to this type of landscape or landmark, you might simply not "see" malls as what they are. You are coming from a different map of the world, have a different experience and this view is valid for you. Interesting point of experience, at least for me!

Shopping areas in Sweden, like you say, takes place on shops along the streets.

The largest shopping area in the Nordic region is called Nordstan 'The North City* which is a 'combined' streets for shopping. Most 'buildings' have 3 storeys i.e. basement, ground level and level 1.

I must entice my Swedish comrades on shoping etiquette in KL... *advertise*

which brings me to the point that we should always do out homework a.k.a research before embarking on a trip.
