Personal branding at Little Penang

I went to Little Penang in Megamall with a friend today. There was this one waiter. During our course, he didn't say a word. No confirmation of the order, just taking it and off he went.

We talked about him. How much would it take to get him to talk. We actually managed to get a little smile on his lips. Proud of our achievements.

In the end, we said that this is actually an interesting "case" of personal branding. The waiter managed to occupy about 10-15 minutes of our conversation. This is quite a long time, if you just meet for 90 minutes.

We then also had the idea that this would be an interesting branding case for a restaurant. Imagine, you have a restaurant and none of the waiters smile. Stern but friendly faces. The one guest, who manages to make them smile or talk (without any meant trick involved) would get their food free.

Anybody out there with a restaurant to try this?

the trick to get malaysians to be friendly is to smile from your heart. haha.. it's awesome! i got free toppings on my baskin robin's because i smiled at the ice cream guy.. hahaha.. a lot of malaysians tend to be a little cold when it comes to consumer-producer interaction. the waiters, salesperson and whatnot usually get screamed at instead of signs of gratitude, which is why if ur nice, they'll always manage a smile. not only that, i'm sure it'll make their day too! :)

I remember this restaurant in London called Wong Kee. The waiters are damn rude. We went there because we were poor. They serve the cheapest food. But I know some qwailor went there because they are amused by their attitude. They are weird.

But I am a good friend of theirs. Because when I went there, I usually had a HK comic with me - Sky Down...:D All of them took turns to read.

Not difficult to blend into other people circle, if we try....:D

Give away food for free? I've made friends with this particular aunty at this one bakery near my school back when I was in Form 4-5. I would get 20-50 cents off off the buns I buy since I visit her shop every other day :p
