Earthquake update - my story

Last night's earthquake was pretty violent - I experienced three earthquakes in my life, and I feel that this one was the heaviest. Heavier than the one on December 26, 2004

My wife woke me up at 12.15 AM, Malaysian time, saying, that the building is shaking due to an earthqake. I couldn't believe it first, but heard the window grills vibrating. I got up from the bed, and felt it as well. The grills kept shakin and the building vibrated.

We heard people outside on the aisle of our floor - we are staying at the 11th floor, and decided to leave the apartment.

Quickly, we took some of our important documents (may be we should prepare a bag, containing necessary items?), I woke up my child and off we went down. A lot of people were already on the road, and cars drove off, probably those, that had relatives nearby, who stay in low-rise buildings. This was our decision as well. We drove to my sister-in-law.

My child took it a bit badly. He was very worried, and wasn't sure what to do, what would happen to his toys. He was very brave, still, went down the many floors, without complaining.

» Massive earthquake in Sumatra - Malaysia feels the tremors from Messy Christian
Yesterday, around midnight, I felt something strange. For a moment I felt as if my heart was beating so hard that my body was shaking. Puzzled, I stood still for a while, then realise I was dizzy and I felt... [Read More]

umm.. i'm not sure in the case of apartments but when i lived in jakarta we were told to hide under our tables. the first time the earthquake hit (we were an 1 hour away from the epicenter), the whole school populations ran outside. we got a lecture from the head master after that. the rationale for NOT running outside is that if ur outside ure more vulnerable to falling objects because u have no protection.

sorry not capitalizations. i'm in the process of finishing my 15 paged paper. i'm a bit lazy to type now. hehe.

Somehow even the first event hasn't really awaken us about the dangers of a repeat of the previous disaster, complacency may cost us more, at the very least it was commendable that an earlier warning was provided to countries that might be affected in case another tsunami was to form, yet civil defence measures for citizens in Malaysia is still lacking. Hope everyone is fine and your kid is one brave soul.

Andreas,
I hope you took the stairs down instead of the lift?

So strange, coz I didn't feel anything at my place. I stay around Old Klang Road too. Only knew about it when I saw the news online this morning. Glad you and your family are ok.

In Singapore, sometime around January a few weeks after the December tsunami, the government there had actually gone around publishing and circulating material on evacuation and a survival bag kit thingy just in case of a tsunami (since it's an island) or earthquake (tremors).

I remember distinctly reading about it and how you should get in copies of your important documents, some matches, torchlight, a few clothes and etc in a bag and grab it when you need to evacuate your home.

What amazes me is that until today, OUR M'sian government has yet to publish any kind of information, choosing to rely on the media instead.
